What is In-Person IOP?

An In-Person Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is a structured, non-residential level of addiction and mental health treatment that sits between standard outpatient care and inpatient or residential rehab, providing a highly structured program that addresses substance use and relapse prevention for individuals who do not require medical detoxification or 24-hour supervision.

IOP services typically offer a minimum of nine hours of treatment per week, often across three three-hour sessions, combining group therapy, individual counseling, and evidence-based clinical care. Clients attend sessions on-site at a treatment facility while returning home or to a sober living environment each day, allowing them to maintain responsibilities at home, school, or work.

This makes IOP particularly helpful for individuals stepping down from a residential addiction treatment program, providing the continued structure needed for strong, lasting recovery as they reintegrate into daily life.

Benefits of In-Person IOP

In-person Intensive Outpatient Programs offer a clinically structured path to recovery that supports men at every stage of the healing process.

  1. Structured therapeutic environment. Consistent, scheduled sessions provide a reliable clinical framework that reinforces accountability and helps men build stable recovery routines.
  2. Evidence-based, face-to-face care. Direct access to licensed clinicians allows for real-time clinical assessment, personalized feedback, and nuanced therapeutic interventions that are difficult to replicate remotely.
  3. Peer connection and group support. In-person group therapy fosters genuine interpersonal connection, shared accountability, and the development of prosocial skills essential to long-term recovery.
  4. Integrated dual-diagnosis treatment. IOP addresses co-occurring mental health conditions alongside substance use, ensuring that underlying issues such as anxiety, depression, and trauma are treated concurrently.
  5. Continuity of care after residential treatment. For men transitioning out of a residential program, in-person IOP provides a structured step-down level of care that maintains clinical intensity while restoring independence.
  6. Real-world application of recovery skills. Clients return home after each session, allowing them to immediately apply coping strategies, relapse prevention techniques, and emotional regulation skills in their everyday environment.
  7. Family and support system involvement. In-person programming creates natural opportunities to engage family members in the treatment process, reinforcing recovery-supportive relationships outside of clinical hours.

Virtual or In-Person IOP: Which Is Best for You?

Choosing between virtual and in-person Intensive Outpatient treatment depends on your clinical needs, home environment, and personal circumstances. Ask yourself the following questions to help determine which format is the right fit.

  • Where am I in my recovery journey? If you are stepping down from a residential program like Foundry Steamboat, in-person IOP offers the structured clinical continuity that supports that transition most effectively.
  • How stable is my home environment? Virtual IOP requires a private, distraction-free space and a supportive household. If your home environment presents risks to your recovery, in-person treatment provides a safer therapeutic setting.
  • Do I have co-occurring mental health conditions? Higher clinical complexity — such as unresolved trauma, severe depression, or dual-diagnosis disorders — generally benefits from the real-time observation and hands-on clinical support that in-person care provides.
  • What are my transportation and geographic realities? If distance, lack of transportation, or a rural location creates a barrier to attending on-site sessions, virtual IOP may be the more accessible and sustainable option.
  • How strong is my accountability structure? In-person IOP provides built-in accountability through scheduled attendance, on-site drug screening, and face-to-face clinical oversight. If self-directed accountability is a challenge, the in-person format offers more external structure.
  • Do I have reliable access to technology? Virtual IOP requires a stable internet connection and a compatible device. If technology access is inconsistent, in-person treatment eliminates that variable entirely.
  • What does my treatment team recommend? Clinical recommendation should be the primary driver of this decision. If you are transitioning out of residential care, consult your care team about which level and format of outpatient treatment best matches your current clinical needs.

How Foundry Steamboat IOP Stands-Out

While there are more than 14,000 behavioral healthcare providers nationwide, finding effective treatment can be challenging. Helping clients develop recovery-supportive lifestyles

Lasting recovery requires more than clinical treatment. We help clients build healthy, balanced lifestyles addressing work, relationships, home life, and recreation because sustainable recovery is built on a foundation that extends well beyond our program.

Addiction affects the entire family system, not just the individual. Our family program engages loved ones throughout the treatment process, helping to repair relationships, build recovery-supportive home environments, and end generational cycles of addiction.

What to Ask Before In-Person IOP Treatment?

Are your care providers licensed?

Licensed care providers have received substantial education, training, testing, and supervision. Licensure is a sign that clinicians are qualified to practice their discipline and have been trained in a real-world setting by qualified trainers. Believe it or not, not all treatment providers are licensed or employ licensed team members. Employing licensed clinicians is a sign of quality and a commitment to providing evidence-based care.

Do you use evidence-based therapies?

Evidence-based therapies have been proven to be effective and are widely considered the standard of care. While some providers use evidence-based therapies, others may only offer facilitated 12-Step or group therapies.

Do you practice measurement-based care?

Measurement-based care involves using symptom rating scales before, during, and after treatment to gauge clinical progress. Foundry Front Range uses the PHQ-9, GAD-7, and BAM assessments to measure clinical progress related to substance use cravings and depression and anxiety symptoms. We also use the Recovery Capital Index to identify the determinants of health that contribute to long-term recovery.

Do you offer psychiatric prescribing services?

Psychiatric medications can make a crucial difference to people experiencing substance use and mental health disorders. A skilled prescriber is able to identify medications that are effective at controlling symptoms without jeopardizing recovery. Having an integrated psychiatric prescriber is advantageous and signifies that a provider believes in the value of medication-assisted treatment approaches.

Do you provide continuing care planning?

Substance use disorders are chronic conditions requiring ongoing management. While clients can learn vital skills and establish a baseline of substance-free sobriety during treatment, they should have a specific plan, including medical and psychological services, support groups, and wellness services tailored to their needs and resources.

Do you accept insurance?

Foundry Front Range can work with most major insurance plans. Being an in-network provider with major insurance plans means more than affordability. Becoming an in-network provider requires adhering to strict quality standards, regulatory compliance, and evidence-based practices.

What are your outcome measures?

High-quality treatment providers measure their outcomes to ensure the effectiveness of their treatment services. Methods of measuring treatment outcomes vary. Many high-quality providers attempt to understand how long clients remain free from substance use disorder after treatment and experience reduced co-occurring mental health symptoms.

Are you accredited by The Joint Commission?

The Joint Commission Accreditation is America’s largest medical accreditation institution. Being accredited by The Joint Commission signifies that a healthcare provider meets high-quality care standards, follows compliance and safety procedures, and provides evidence-based and measurement-based care. Foundry Front Range is accredited by The Joint Commission.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) FAQs

Here are some questions people also ask about IOP treatments:

What is an IOP and why is it used?

An Intensive Outpatient Program is a structured level of addiction and mental health treatment that provides clinical support without requiring an overnight stay. It is used for individuals who need more care than traditional weekly therapy can offer but do not require the 24-hour supervision of a residential program. IOP is commonly used as a step-down from residential treatment or as a primary level of care for those with a stable home environment and strong motivation to recover.

How long does IOP typically last?

Most IOP programs run between eight and twelve weeks, though duration varies based on individual clinical needs and progress. Clients typically attend multiple sessions per week, with session frequency often decreasing as treatment advances and stability improves. Your treatment team will determine the appropriate length and pace based on ongoing clinical assessment.

What is the difference between IOP and PHP?

A Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is a more intensive level of care than IOP, typically involving five to six hours of structured programming per day, five days per week. IOP generally requires nine or more hours of treatment per week across three to four sessions, offering more flexibility for clients to maintain work, family, and daily responsibilities. PHP is best suited for individuals requiring close clinical oversight, while IOP is appropriate for those who have achieved a degree of stability and are ready for greater independence.

What happens in an outpatient program?

Outpatient programs provide structured therapeutic services including individual therapy, group counseling, psychoeducation, and relapse prevention planning, all while clients continue living at home. Treatment sessions are scheduled throughout the week, allowing clients to apply recovery skills in real-world settings between appointments. Depending on the level of care, outpatient programming may also include medication management, family therapy, and coordination with outside providers.

What is considered intensive therapy?

Intensive therapy generally refers to treatment that exceeds the frequency and clinical depth of standard weekly outpatient sessions, typically involving multiple hours of care per week across several modalities. In the context of IOP, this means a combination of group therapy, individual counseling, and skills-based programming delivered in a coordinated, structured format. The goal of intensive therapy is to provide a higher level of clinical support during the critical early stages of recovery without requiring a residential level of care.
