Knowing how addiction treatment programs differ can help you find the right care for you or a loved one.
The differences built into Foundry Steamboat make it ideally suited to helping adult men living with substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders and trauma.
Addiction and co-occurring mental health disorders are complex conditions requiring personalized and comprehensive treatment approaches. Like other medical fields, not all addiction treatment providers offer the same services or meet the needs of all patients. Several factors differentiate addiction treatment providers, including treatment models, the skills and experience levels of clinicians, the treatment environment, and more.
Our differences make Foundry Steamboat ideally suited to helping adult men experiencing substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders and trauma establish a firm foothold in recovery. If you or a loved one needs assistance, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

We Are Designed Differently to Help Men Heal.
What makes Foundry Steamboat different? A combination of our unique Trauma-Integrated Care model, focus on identifying and resolving trauma, gender-specific curriculum, extensive family programming, the training and caring of our treatment team, and a focus on creating a clinically intensive and enjoyable treatment experience make our program meaningfully different.
Our Trauma-Integrated Care Model

Our Trauma-Integrated Care model, developed by Chief Clinical Officer Michael Barnes, PhD, is informed by over 40 years of clinical practice and research. Trauma-Integrated Care is designed to help people feel safe and supported, enabling them to engage more openly and productively in treatment. The Trauma-Integrated Care philosophy focuses on identifying and resolving untreated trauma, which is a significant barrier to recovery and overall health and well-being. We use numerous trauma therapies to treat unresolved trauma and help men learn to self-regulate their emotional responses without relying on substances, which is a typical side-effect of long-term substance dependence. Our treatment is delivered by specially trained staff in a milieu that reduces stress and anxiety.
Special focus on polyvagal and emotional response regulation
Our curriculum helps men understand the role of the polyvagal nervous system in our stress response and techniques to naturally regulate emotional response. This knowledge and skill is vital to helping men feel at peace and in control in daily life, which is essential to maintaining well-being and recovery.
Focus on Identifying & Resolving Trauma
Trauma is common among men suffering from substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders, and many do not realize they have been living with unresolved trauma. Trauma does not require experiencing a major act of violence or disaster. It can come from any adverse life event or neglect. People can go years, or even a lifetime, without addressing their trauma. However, untreated trauma manifests as debilitating mental health problems, including depression, anxiety, dissociation, and more. People with trauma often have a hard time accessing their emotions and having normal relationships. For these reasons, trauma is a leading cause of addiction and mental health disorders, and diagnosing and treating trauma is essential to lasting recovery.

Gender-Specific Men's Treatment Programming

Gender-specific care makes addiction treatment more relevant, comfortable, and effective. Clients in our men’s program often report feeling more open in the company of male peers. We discuss the experience of being a man in today’s world and the problems associated with male stereotypes, expectations, and lifestyles. Many of the men in our program also experience the joy of being understood, accepted, and befriended for the first time in a long time.
Our men’s residential addiction treatment program is a physically and emotionally safe environment where men can let down their guard and be themselves. Our men’s treatment focuses on addressing longstanding tropes and ingrained beliefs about being a man that can get in the way of asking for help when needed and leading an authentic life.
- Feel comfortable discussing your issues openly with other men.
- Discuss problems that other men experience and learn how to deal with them effectively.
Extensive Family Program
We believe safe and supportive home and family environments are crucial to maintaining recovery. To help individuals and families learn how to provide a recovery-supportive home and family life, we provide specialized family programming from the Michael Barnes Family Institute. This two-level program provides education and coaching that helps all family members understand the multi-generational disease of addiction and how to make changes that improve the well-being and quality of life for all family members.

A Caring Team With Special Training

Perhaps above all, we truly care. Ask our alumni community, and you are likely to hear that our team members are deeply invested in helping our clients. This team of carefully chosen professionals receives specialized training that supports our Trauma-Integrated Care model. Every team member works to maintain an environment where men feel safe, comfortable, and able to be open and authentic with their peers and care team members.
Our Clinically Intensive & Enjoyable Treatment Experience
Foundry Steamboat is built for men who are ready to work toward recovery. Experience teaches us that establishing a solid recovery foundation requires a high level of comprehensive therapy and coordinated services. Our program contains very little “filler.” Time here is spent in individual and group therapy, learning, participating in wellness activities, and supporting peers. However, we also recognize the value of simply having fun. For many of our clients, treatment at Foundry Steamboat is the first time in years that they find joy in the company of other men and without substances — an experience we help men continue after their stay.

Using Outcome Data to Improve Care

Foundry Steamboat employs measurement-based care, using measures taken before, during, and after treatment to assess clinical progress. We use a range of symptom rating scales to measure anxiety, depression, and other mood disorder symptoms. We also assess each client’s ability to maintain recovery and the resources available to support it in their home environment. Through regular assessment, we can adjust client treatment plans to meet evolving needs. By aggregating the data we collect, our clinical leadership can improve the quality of our care, our educational curriculum, and other critical treatment functions. Knowing how our treatment performs helps us continuously improve our program’s effectiveness in helping men heal.
